On Saturday, January 6th, 2024, the atmosphere at High School West was electric as the West Boys Varsity Basketball team took on East in a thrilling match. However, the significance of the event extended far beyond the game itself. It was a day of unity, compassion, and unwavering support for one of our own – Hannah Waller, a student at High School West.
Hannah, a beloved member of the High School West community battling cancer, holds a special place in the hearts of many. Her connection to the West Girls Varsity team, through her sister, has fostered a sense of solidarity within the school.
The Booster Club, helped to orchestrated this special event in partnership with the coaches and the Athletic Director. Setting up tables to raise money for Relay for Life and the Smithtown Children's Foundation, we appealed to the generosity of attendees, urging them to contribute to these worthy causes in honor of Hannah.
But it wasn't just about fundraising; it was about coming together as a community to show our support in tangible ways. The West girls teams, embodying the spirit of unity, volunteered their time to post "Here for Hannah" signs and lend a helping hand at the snack table. Their presence underscored the depth of connection that exists within our school, and our community.
The impact of the day reverberated beyond the confines of the gymnasium, as members of the 5th CYO team from St. Patrick's joined in the festivities. Their scrimmage at halftime not only added to the excitement of the event but also symbolized the broader community coming together in solidarity.
Over $520 in cash donations were collected, supplemented by additional contributions made online. It was a testament to the power of collective action and the capacity for kindness to effect meaningful change.
